Jorge Salmerón Castro, MD, DrSc is the Director of the Epidemiology and Health Services Research Unit of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Morelos, Mexico. He was part of The Center for Health Equity in the Americas, USC Institute for Global Health, and the Institute for Prevention Research Speaker Series on March 9, 2016.
Dr. Salmerón presented on the “Innovative Approaches to Prevent HPV Infection and Cervical Cancer in Mexico.” In his presentation, Dr. Salmerón calls for “more efficient strategies and sustainable alternatives in primary and secondary prevention” for cervical cancer. Dr. Salmerón and his team are currently researching and testing which cervical cancer screenings are more effective. They are also conducting studies that involve the HPV vaccine.
Dr. Salmerón attributes current cervical cancer morality rates in Mexico and elsewhere as the result of “non-organizational screening, inequity in access of health services, and lack of political will.” Dr. Salmerón hopes to set the most effective and organized method of screening cervical cancer that yields the best outcomes for women.
